The Chamber has endorsed a major Ontario Health Study. Here are pertinent details:
Ontario Health Study: Be part of something big! Owen Sound One of Three Assessment Centres provincially
The Owen Sound Chamber of Commerce is endorsing the Study. Everyone can contribute by informing their staff and encouraging them to be a part of this important initiative. Have you ever wondered why some people get cancer or heart disease while others don’t? That is the question the Ontario Health Study will answer. By discovering new forms of prevention and causes for such chronic diseases as cancer, heart disease and diabetes, the Ontario Health Study wants to make your community and the rest of Ontario a healthier place to live for future generations. The Study is recruiting 150,000 Ontarians over the next two years. It is one of five regional studies recruiting 300,000 Canadians to help understand the risk factors and causes of chronic disease, including cancer. Currently, the Study has three assessments centres, with one in Owen Sound. This is Owen Sound’s opportunity to help future generations. To-date, there has been a positive response rate for participants and we hope it continues. We have completed more than 1,000 assessments in this area since May. However, more participants are still needed to meet the target. Who can join the study? All residents who are between the ages of 35 and 69 are eligible. You can participate even if you do not consider yourself to be in good health. How can I join the study? You can join by calling toll-free at 1-866-606-0686 to book an appointment. The appointment will take two to three hours depending on your medical history. What will be expected of me? During your visit at the centre, you will have some physical measures taken (e.g. blood pressure) and be asked to complete a questionnaire on your medical history, lifestyle, residence, and other factors that may relate to your health. Also, you will be asked to provide a blood and urine sample while at the centre. In subsequent years, participants will receive a brief annual survey that you complete at home.

A little of your time could help to reduce the risk of cancer or other chronic diseases in your community.
