SavourVaughan Restaurant Week has once again teamed up with the Vaughan Fire Rescue and Fortinos in Woodbridge for a massive Food Drive to benefit the Vaughan Food Bank. The food drive will kick off at Fortinos on Hwy 7 and Ansley Grove Road on Saturday, October 3rd, 2009 from 11:00am to 3:00pm, sponsored by TD Canada Trust Bank Vaughan District and proudly supported by The Knights of Columbus St. Peter's Council in Woodbridge.

We are asking for your participation with the first ever “Cash and Can City Challenge.” This is a friendly city challenge to local residents, businesses, neighbourhoods and City Wards to reach out and lend a helping hand this year.

The food drive is the hallmark of SavourVaughan’s tradition of community service. People in our own neighbourhoods need our support to make ends meet in these economic times. Each and every family deserves a great Thanksgiving meal and collectively as a community we can help ensure that this happens. The challenge this year is especially important. The Vaughan Food Bank has seen an increase of over 25 percent more usage in the past few months and the demand to service these families is at a critical stage. The Cash and Can City Challenge hopes to ease that pressure.

We are urging neighbourhoods to get together, donate a can or two and help make a difference. The challenge is also a call to action to local businesses to encourage their employees to bring a can to work during this time and present the “cash and cans” during the Food Drive. Local Councillors are also being urged to pound the pavement in their local wards to take the challenge and collect cash and cans for a great cause. The goal is to reach $20,000 dollars before Thanksgiving Weekend but need your help to get there!

Thanks to RBC, The Carpenters’ Union, BDC and The Hair Crew who have already confirmed their support by taking the challenge!

The Food Drive kicks into high gear on Saturday, October 3rd at Fortinos where everyone is invited to join Vaughan Fire Rescue and the Knights of Columbus for a fun filled day of food and activities along with prizes. The Knights will be on hand to collect donations and serve up delicious treats. People who do not have time to attend the Food Drive on October 3rd are still encouraged to participate.
